The short answer
For most small businesses in Angola the best first step is a clear website that people can find and trust, linked to WhatsApp Business for conversations. An app comes later, only when customers will use it often or when it needs phone features such as the camera or notifications.
The sections below explain how to decide, and when each option is the wrong choice.
Start where your customers already are
If most of your customers already message you on WhatsApp, the first improvement may not be new software at all. It may be a clear way for new customers to find you, and a quick way to start that conversation.
Look at how customers reach you today: phone calls, WhatsApp, Instagram, walking in. Then ask what slows them down or makes them give up. The answer points to what to build first.
A website is for being found and trusted
A website works for you around the clock. It is where Google, Google Maps and social media send people, and it is where a new customer checks that your business is real.
Build a website first when you want new customers to find you, when you need to explain what you do, or when you want to take bookings and enquiries.
A good first website is small and clear: what you do, who it is for, where you are, how to contact you, and a few examples of your work. It should open fast on a phone and be easy to read in Portuguese, with English if your customers need it.
WhatsApp is for conversations
WhatsApp Business is well suited to questions, quotes and follow-up. A good website makes it easy to start that conversation, with a button that opens a chat with the customer's message already written.
WhatsApp works less well as your only presence. People who do not know you yet cannot easily find you there, and a long chat history is a poor place to look up your prices, your address or your hours.
What about an Instagram or Facebook page?
A social media page is a good, free way to show your work and stay in touch with people who already follow you. But the page belongs to the platform, the rules and the reach can change, and search engines show it less reliably than a website of your own.
Treat social media as a way to bring people to your website and your WhatsApp, not as a replacement for them.
An app is for repeated use
An app makes sense when people will use it often, or when it needs phone features such as the camera, location or notifications. If customers would use it once or twice a year, a website usually serves them better.
An app also asks more of the people who use it: they have to find it, download it using mobile data, and keep it on their phone. Ask whether your customers will do that for what you offer.
Before building an app, it is often worth testing the idea with a simple website or a WhatsApp flow. If people use that, you will know the app is worth building.
A simple rule of thumb
- Want to be found: build a website.
- Want to talk to customers: use WhatsApp Business, linked from your website.
- Want people to come back often, or to use the phone's features: consider an app.
- Repeating the same task by hand: consider automation before new software.
Common combinations
- Website plus WhatsApp Business: the usual starting point for a service business, a clinic, a shop or a restaurant.
- Website with online booking: when customers ask for appointments or reservations by message all day.
- Online store plus WhatsApp: when customers want to buy but also want to ask questions before paying.
- Website first, app later: when you are not yet sure people will use an app regularly.
